Prince Rupert Doubles Box Count Over Second Quarter 2008
08/17/2009

During the first six months of 2009, the Port of Prince Rupert posted a 124 percent increase in container traffic over the same time period in 2008. Between January 1 and June 30, the port handled a total of 97,575 TEUs - including 58,695 inbound and 38,880 outbound TEUs.

The port opened its first container terminal - the Fairview Terminal - in November 2007. During the first six months of 2008, only one container ship called weekly at the port. A second weekly ship call was introduced by the CKYH Alliance in July 2008. Today, both Hanjin and COSCO ships with 5,500-TEU capacity call at the port.

Port officials acknowledge that a real "apples to apples" comparison of 2009 growth will not be available until the third quarter of the year, when it will be possible to gauge the volume of two weekly ship calls in 2009 compared with the same number of ship calls in 2008.
